Temple Beth Or Religious School Family Chanukah Day 12/14/2008Recognizing the challenging economic situation this holiday season. The current administration has contacted the temple about a new stimulus program. “Continuing the current trend of large-scale mergers and acquisitions, it was announced today at a press conference that Christmas and Chanukah will merge. An industry source said that the deal had been in the works for about 1300 years.

While details were not available at press time, it is believed that the overhead cost of having twelve days of Christmas and eight days of Chanukah was becoming prohibitive for both sides. By combining forces, we're told, the world will be able to enjoy consistently high-quality service during the 15 Days of Chrisnukah, as the new holiday is being called.

Massive layoffs are expected, with lords a-leaping and maids a-milking being the hardest hit.  As part of the conditions of the agreement, the letters on the dreydl, currently in Hebrew, will be replaced by Latin, thus becoming unintelligible to a wider audience.

Temple Beth Or Religious School Family Chanukah Day 12/14/2008Also, instead of translating to A great miracle happened there, the message on the dreydl will be the more generic Miraculous stuff happens. In exchange, it is believed that Jews will be allowed to use Santa Claus and his vast merchandising resources for buying and delivering their gifts. In fact, one of the sticking points holding up the agreement for at least three hundred years was the question of whether Jewish children could leave milk and cookies for Santa, even after having eaten meat for dinner. A breakthrough came last year when Oreos were finally declared to be kosher.  All sides appeared happy about this development except for Santa's dentist.  He then closed the press conference by leading all present in a rousing rendition of Oy, Come all Ye Faithful.

This time of year should be one of joy and maybe a little humor for both Christians and Jews. My prayer is that we can embrace our practices as Jews while appreciating those of our Christian neighbors, friends and often family members. Perhaps a merger isn’t necessary but understanding always needed.

Happy Holidays!

Be well,

Rabbi David Burstein

Your Help Is Needed for Christmas

Editor's note -- David's Church provides volunteers for Temple Beth Or's high holy days every year so that families who need babysitting may worship.

Please consider returning this mitzvah for this very special holy day for our Christian friends and neighbors.

Our friends at David's Church are in need of babysitters for their Christmas Services on Christmas Eve Wednesday, December 24, 2008 as follows:

7:00 p.m. Service - 6 people needed. This is a large service. Some volunteers will be with babies in the nursery, some with older kids downstairs.

9:30 p.m. Service - 2-3 people needed. This service is not as large. Nursery care workers with all ages.

Please note that the times noted are the times that the the service starts and it would be best if as many of the volunteers as possible could arrive about 20 minutes before the service begins.

If you can assist, please contact Marvin Miller at 641-5374 or by email at srmmem@aol.com.

Spotlight on Preschool

Preschool is hoppin’! Recently, our topics have been Shabbat and Havdalah. We read a story about Shabbat, made play challah out of knee-high stockings and stuffing, and sang Shabbat songs.

At our last meeting, Rabbi David came and told us about Havdalah. We also talked about our names. We learned about how our parents chose our names and then we made name plaques.

This week, for Chanukah, we read a story about the holiday and made "hand menorahs." We also sang some holiday songs.

We have a wonderful class. We hope that everyone has an enjoyable holiday. See you in the new year!
