Happy Thanksgiving!

November 23, 2008

A beautiful handmade ChanukiahThanksgiving growing up was about family and football. We would wolf down our turkey and head to my cousin’s backyard. Growing up in a family of 3 boys meant that ineveitably someone would get hurt but it didn’t seem to matter. It was fall and cold and the ball was flying and we were focused. Hours and hours just being a kid, with my brothers and cousins, playing football.

TBO Religious School 11/23/2008I will be going home with my family this week for Thanksgiving. This will be my first without my dad and will be bittersweet. But on Thursday morning Elizabeth’s family holds an annual football game ( I am convinced that they needed a linebacker so I was drafted in through marriage) Last year for the first time Coby and Emma played. A silly fun game of touch football and I felt like a kid once more. It felt great. That is until I woke up the next morning. Some things like playing football stay the same but recovery is a young man’s game.

My wishes for a peaceful and joyous holiday

Be well,

Rabbi David Burstein

Your Help Is Needed for Christmas

Editor's note -- David's Church provides volunteers for Temple Beth Or's high holy days every year so that families who need babysitting may worship.

Please consider returning this mitzvah for this very special holy day for our Christian friends and neighbors.

Our friends at David's Church are in need of babysitters for their Christmas Services on Christmas Eve Wednesday, December 24, 2008 as follows:

7:00 p.m. Service - 6 people needed. This is a large service. Some volunteers will be with babies in the nursery, some with older kids downstairs.

9:30 p.m. Service - 2-3 people needed. This service is not as large. Nursery care workers with all ages.

Please note that the times noted are the times that the the service starts and it would be best if as many of the volunteers as possible could arrive about 20 minutes before the service begins.

If you can assist, please contact Marvin Miller at 641-5374 or by email at srmmem@aol.com.

Grade 9Spotlight on Grade 9

At the beginning of the year, we started with a basic understanding of the term religion. We then moved on to explain our own religion. We are currently discussing some of the lesser known facts & superstitions of Judaism as well as exploring other interesting and lesser known religions. In future lessons, we plan on exploring the mystical side of Judaism as well as any other topics that any of students may want to discuss.
