Tailgate Shabbat 11/15/2008What is the hope for Judaism?

The hope is a combination of adults and children working together. A blend of our history and our future being together in the present moment.

My weekend has been a collection of such moments. On Friday night I spoke to our 7th and 8th grade classes about staying connected to each moment. I had just experienced the culmination of teachers and students putting together a great service. I shared the following story with them:

TBO Religious School 11/16/2008“In my continous search for spiritual enlightenment I recently watched the sacred movie Kung Fu Panda. In it, Master Uguay, an animated turtle, is talking to Master Shifu, an animated mouse. As you can imagine the moment is touching and profound.

Master Shifu is always worrying about the past and the future. And Master Uguay turns to him and says, The past is just history. The future a mystery and now is a gift-that is why it is called the present. We are given a gift - the present - do we really enjoy it fully?”

7th and 8th grade Shabbat serviceWe are given a gift in Judaism - do we fully recognize it? On Saturday I played football and studied Torah with parents and children and later witnessed an amazing group of 6th graders and their parents struggle and learn from each other during our Shabbaton about Bnai Mitzvah ceremonies. Just trying to stay present I saw the best of Judaism.

My weekend culminated this morning as I prayed with children and teachers. We sang together and enjoyed the liturgy. Judaism at its best is found when children and adults come together. One people. One moment. One hope. Thank you all for a fantastic weekend.

Be well,

Rabbi David Burstein

Don't Miss this Special Talk!

Don't miss a special presentation this Wednesday evening by Rabbi Michael Cook, Rabbi Chessin's husband and a highly respected professor at Hebrew Union College.

Rabbi Cook will be speaking about the origins of the New Testament and discussing some of the ideas presented in his new book, Modern Jews Approach the New Testament.

This free event, sponsored by the Dayton Jewish Cultural Arts and Book Festival, will start at 7PM on Wednesday, November 19, at the CJCE on Versailles Drive. Many Christian pastors and their parishioners are planning to attend this event, and it should be a fascinating, interactive evening.

Grade 7 Discusses Propaganda

Grade 7 today discussed the use of propaganda during World War II - both by Germany and by the Allies. One of the examples used today was a speech that Charlie Chaplin gave dressed and looking like Hitler, knowing that the German Army would view it. In reality, Chaplin's speech was targeting the German people and soldiers to deliver the message of democracy.

With a beginning background noise of seventh grade students opening their snacks, watch this video of instructor Eric Rubinoff describing some of today's lesson and the video recorded and created by Charlie Chaplin.

To see the Charlie Chaplin video that seventh grade students viewed today, click here.

Editor's note -- before today, I'd never heard Charlie Chaplin speak!

What's Cooking with the Culinary Team

TBO Religious School 11/16/2008This Sunday, our Culinary Team worked with seventh grade students to make Pita Bread!

Want to make Pita Bread at home with your family? The recipe that our seventh grade students used appears below.

Thanks to our Culinary Team -- Esther Weiss, Rachel Weiss and Anne Ostrow -- for making Sunday mornings so delicious!

Pita Bread

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 c Warm water
  • 1 t Sugar
  • 3 1/2 t Active dry yeast
  • 1/2 t Salt
  • 5 1/2 c Whole wheat flour

Method:

Place water and sugar in large bowl and stir. Add yeast and stir slightly.

Let rest for 5 minutes. Mix in salt and flour gradually, starting with 3 1/2 cups flour then adding the rest.

More or less water may be required, depending on the brand of the flour. Use enough flour to prevent dough from clinging to bowl.

Knead well for 5 minutes. Place a little vegetable oil on palms of hands and smooth all over to prevent crusting. Cover with plastic, then a cotton towel, and allow to rest for 1/2 an hour.

Set oven at 500F. Divide dough into 8 balls. Roll out each ball into 1/4-inch thickness. Let rest covered for 20 minutes on generously floured table or counter top. Bake on ungreased cookie sheets for 5-8 minutes or until lightly browned. The higher the oven temperature the better the results. May be kept in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for several days or may be frozen.

To warm pita, place on the rack in the oven at 300F for 1-2 minutes.

Tips: Make sure there are no creases in the dough and that the pitas are lying flat on the cooking sheet.
