November 9 , 2008

Sharon WoodsThe weather is beginning to turn and as the temperature drops I realize that a whole new season is really beginning. Change is in the air. Channukah around the corner. And the last clinging leaves are beginning to fall, changing the land around us with their color. No matter who we were supporting in our recent election we all can recognize that a change has definitely affected our country's landscape. It is a new day, a new season and with it comes all the challenges of change.

100_3640.JPGBut we are all in this together. As we enter the winter we hunker down and huddle together, creating warmth from each other's proximity. So too will it be with this time in our country. We need to huddle together and gather warmth from each other. We need to find times to gather and celebrate each other. May we find comfort from this our temple community and in this place truly find hope for all of us.

Be well,

Rabbi David Burstein

100_3631.JPGWhat's Cooking with the Culinary Team

This Sunday, our Culinary Team worked with our sixth grade students to make Rugalach!

Want to make Rugalach at home with your family? The recipe that our sixth grade students used appears below.

Thanks to our Culinary Team -- Esther Weiss, Rachel Weiss and Anne Ostrow -- for making Sunday mornings so delicious!

Rugalach - Yield: 4 dozen

1 cup butter, softened
1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt

Filling:

1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
1/2 cup butter, melted, divided
1/2 cup finely chopped pecans

Method:

In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and cream cheese. Combine flour and salt; gradually add to the creamed mixture. Divid dough into fourths. Wrap each portion in plastic wrap; refrigerate for 1 hour or until easy to handle.

Roll out each portion between two sheets of waxed paper into a 12 inch circle. Remove top sheet of waxed paper. Combine sugar and cinnamon. Brush each circle with 1 tablespoon melted butter. Sprinkle each with 3 tablespoons cinnamon-sugar and 2 tablespoons pecans. Cut each into 12 wedges.

Roll up wedges from the wide end; place pointed side down 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets. Curve ends to form a crescent shape. Bake at 350 degrees for 24-26 minutes or until golden brown. Remove to wire racks. Brush warm cookies with the remaining butter, sprinkle with remaining cinnamon sugar.
