November 2 , 2008

Well it is finally here. The most anticipated election in my lifetime. We here in Ohio have been inundated with advertisements both negative and more negative.

So on Tuesday we will enter into a great event that is part and parcel of being an American. I have been in a position of tempered neutrality during these past months-I take seriously my role as a rabbi and what it means in terms of politics. But now I am going to step two feet first into the arena. Please vote!!! I am asking you from the bottom of my heart. Follow your heart and convictions, enter that booth and vote.

100_3546.JPGWe often look for opportunities to be role models for our children. Take them with you; tell them how important it is to be an active citizen; and vote for them. Tuesday will be a day when we can gather and be a part of something great. Please vote.

Be well,

Rabbi David Burstein

Pet Blessing

100_3552.JPGOur outdoor sanctuary was alive today with barks, meows, tweets and the happy noise of our Temple Beth Or Religious School students, families and staff. As we celebrate the reading of Parashat Noach, we take time to bless our pets -- those who are with us and those who have passed on in the last year. Students also brought their stuffed animal toys as well for a special blessing.

Thank you to Rabbis Chessin and Burstein for this special time for our animal friends.

Spotlight on High School

Rabbi Burstein leading a discussion with high school studentsThere are times when I want to hold on to my high schoolers and keep them young forever. I remember them in 4th and 5th grade when I started at Beth Or. So excited and so innocent.

Now they are 17 and 18 years old. And today in class I wish they were older. At least old enough to vote. What an amazing, well informed and passionate voting population are they going to be.

We spoke last Sunday about both candidates and their positions on Israel. We also spoke at length about what Jews are interested in as far as the election and the challenges facing the younger generation.

The title of our program is Nesiya which means Journey. I am so excited to be traveling with such wonderful students. We are very lucky as temple community to have such a future.

-Rabbi David Burstein
