Spotlight on Confirmation
What constitutes the "Jewish vote?" The 10th grade Confirmation class has been looking at Jewish American voting patterns over the last 100 years, and the candidates' strategies in courting the Jewish vote in the current presidential campaign. While neither the class nor the Temple advocates one candidate over the other, we have focused on the role our religion plays in Jews' political choices and the hot button issues which affect the Jewish vote. How do the candidates address Jewish concerns over issues of global antisemitism, terrorism and Israel's security, as well as health care, social justice, reproductive rights and economic stability? We examined the ads of both presidential candidates in the Jewish press and compared our own opinions to the results of the 2008 Annual Survey of American Jewish Opinions conducted by the American Jewish Committee mid-September:

Upcoming classes will focus on Israel: the nation, the state and the ideal; Separation of religion and state; Christianity, missionaries and the Jewish views of the Messiah; the Holocaust and ethical choices in a choice less society; Sexuality and sacred choices, among other topics of interest to these educated, articulate and delightful 10th graders. It is my honor to be with them every other week on Sunday mornings.
