Temple Beth Or Religious School 4/12/2009We are deep into Passover and the matzah is starting to get a bit old (although I have heard the half life of a sheet is at least 300 years).

We had a wonderful day at school with our classes discussing the crossing of the Red sea and partaking in Passover snacks. There is life beyond the bread of affliction or constriction as we call it in my house. I leave you with a Passover story about matzah. Have a peaceful Passover.

Bernie, a young Jewish boy, decided he wanted to be an aeronautical engineer and build airplanes. Over the years he studied hard, went to the best schools, and finally got his degree. It didn't take long before he gained a reputation as the finest aeronautical engineer in all the land, so he decided to start his own company to build jets.

His company was such a hit that the President of the United States called Bernie into his office. "Bernie," the president said, "the President of Israel wants to commission your company to build an advanced jet fighter for his country. You have our approval--go out and design him the best jet fighter ever made."

Needless to say, Bernie was tremendously excited at this prospect. The entire resources of his company went into building the most advanced jet fighter in history. Everything looked terrific on paper, but when they held the first test flight of the new jet, disaster struck. The wings couldn't take the strain--they broke clean off of the fuselage! (The test pilot parachuted to safety, thank G-d.) Bernie was devastated; his company redesigned the jet fighter, but the same thing happened at the next test flight-- the wings broke off again.

Beside himself with worry, Bernie went to his Schul to pray...to ask G-d where he had gone wrong. The rabbi saw Bernie's sadness, and naturally asked him what the matter was. Bernie decided to pour his heart out to the rabbi.

After hearing the problem with the jet fighter, the rabbi put his arm on Bernie's shoulder and told him, "Listen, I know how to solve your problem. All you have to do is drill a row of holes directly above and below where the wing meets the fuselage. If you do this, I absolutely guarantee the wings won't fall off."

Bernie just smiled and thanked the rabbi for his advice...but the more he thought about it, the more he realized he had nothing to lose. Maybe the rabbi had some holy insight. So Bernie did exactly what the rabbi told him to do. On the next design of the jet fighter, they drilled a row of holes directly above and below where the wings met the fuselage. And...it worked!! The next test flight went perfectly!

Brimming with joy, Bernie went to the Schul to tell the rabbi that his advice had worked. "Naturally," said the rabbi, "I never doubted it would."

"But Rabbi, how did you know that drilling the holes would prevent the wings from falling off?"

"Bernie," the rabbi intoned, "I'm an old man. I've lived for many, many years and I've celebrated Passover many, many times. And in all those years, not once--NOT ONCE--has the matzoh broken on the perforation.

Be well,

Rabbi David Burstein

Spotlight on Preschool

Temple Beth Or Religious School 4/12/2009Our preschool program has once again had a great year. During every class, to highlight each holiday we are studying, we sing songs with Ms. Jessica Simpson, read a story with Ms. Marsha Goldberg and do an art project with Ms. Joni Watson. For Purim this year we made fun masks to wear to the carnival. We celebrated Tu B'Shvat by decorating cupcakes and singing "Happy Birthday" to the trees and planting parsley that we can use on Passover. For our class this week we will make a Passover counting book. It has been a wonderful year and we will be sad to see it end in May.

"We could learn a lot from crayons... Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box."

Pre-registration is coming!

May 3, 10 and 17 are pre-registration days for next year's Religious School and Hebrew School. (Religious School begins on September 13, 2009, by the way!)

To kick it up a notch, this year's forms are pre-printed with all your student's information. You need only to verify nothing has changed, make any corrections necessary and sign. Easy!

Pre-planning for next year's classes is very important to us. Please help us by stopping by the registration tables in the lobby during one of these mornings and registering your students now for the 2009-2010 school year.

Ben and Adam marbelize chocolate on the Matzo BrittleMake Matzo Brittle for Passover

Here's a quick treat you can make and share with friends to enjoy during Passover!

Matzo Brittle

10-12 sheets of matzo (may need more or less depending upon size of your baking sheets)

1 pound butter or margarine

2 cups brown sugar

Your choice of toppings: chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, chopped nuts

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Line rimmed baking sheets with foil and spray lightly with cooking spray. Place boards of matzo, breaking into smaller rectangles and squares as needed, on the sheets until filled. No matzo should overlap.

Melt butter or margarine in a heavy sauce pan with the brown sugar. Stir constantly until the mixture comes to a boil. Boil 3 minutes, then evenly pour and spread over the matzo.

Place the baking sheet in the oven and immediately drop the temperature to 350 degrees.

Bake for 15 minutes or until you see the brown sugar mixture bubbling evenly. Remove from the oven to a cooling rack.

Immediately sprinkle white and milk chocolate chips over the matzo. (Use other types of chips, such as butterscotch chips, peanut butter chips, etc. and/or nuts to your taste)

Allow the chips to melt for about 5-10 minutes, then use a knife to marbleize the chocolate over the matzo.

Allow to cool a while longer, then place the baking sheet in the refrigerator to allow the matzo to harden and chill.

When thoroughly chilled, cut or break into pieces. Keep refrigerated in a covered container or zip top bag.
