DSCN1254The first meeting of KULANU, the combined high school program here in Dayton, was an amazing success.

20 Beth Or students joined with other temples and their students to spend a day learning about social justice. TheThe highlight of the program was a visit fron Ethan Zohn the winner of Survivor: Africa. Ethan shared his connection to Judaism and the 4 "M "s that helped him win. They were Mitzvot, Menstch, Mussar and Middot.

DSCN1245After a wonderful lunch with Ethan, we spent time studying Torah, learning about social justice in music and spritual activism. It was a great day. The 10-12th grade students are now preparing for our retreat on May 1st. It also should be a fantastic opportunity.

Be well,

Rabbi David Burstein

Spotlight on Kindergarten

Kindergarten MosesWe are continuing with our adventures from the Torah, experiencing the lives of the Avot and Imahot (fathers and mothers): Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob, Rachel and Leah, plus Joseph and Moses. We learned that twins aren’t always alike, nor are they always nice to each other, but if they’re lucky, like Jacob and Esau, they can become friends again after many years of being apart. We learned that just like Jacob tricked his father into giving him a blessing, Jacob was tricked into marrying Rachel’s older sister, Leah. We learned that Joseph had amazing gifts, such as interpreting dreams, and used these gifts to elevate himself from a prisoner and slave to a prince, and he even helped his brothers who had sold him into slavery many years ago. We learned that Moses was born a slave, raised as a prince, and God helped him free the Jewish slaves in Egypt.

We traced our bodies, created our own life-sized Torah character, then wrote a story about that person. Check out them hanging in the hallway by our classroom. They’re wonderful!

It’s been a blessing of a year with these amazing children, and I want to thank each of the parents for sharing their families with me each Sunday.

DSCN1249Fourth Grade Mock Wedding Was a Lovely Celebration

Mazel tov to our mock bride and mock groom, who were married this past Sunday during our annual Fourth Grade Mock Wedding.

Instructors Jay and Rachel Weiss worked hard to help the students have a wonderful and authentic experience, from music and decorations to costumes and the ketubah.

Thanks also to our ever-present PTO Volunteers who graciously served refreshments at the reception following the wedding.

DSC_0003Mitzvah Opportunity

Our friends at David’s Church are in need of childcare providers for their Easter Services on Sunday, April 12, 2009. There are two services, one at 9 am and one at 10:45 am. Volunteers would need to arrive 15 to 20 minutes before the service. We need between 4-6 individuals for each service.

If you can assist, please contact Marvin Miller at 641-5374 or by e-mail at srmmem@aol.com.

There are lots of fun things going on at TBO Religious School on Sunday mornings. Don't miss a moment of it - view our photostream at Flickr today by clicking here.

Even better, why not join us next Sunday and linger over a cup of coffee and a bagel at Cafe Or, or some good study in Rabbi Chessin's Tanakh study group (10:30 am)?
