March 15, 2009

Kindergarten students reading The Matzo Ball ManTemple Beth Or Religious School was once again abuzz with activity and signs of spring on Sunday morning.

Students arrived and exclaimed with delight that our ducks are back. Each year, a mama duck takes residence in our inner courtyard with her babies. There are no signs of babies yet, but students enjoyed seeing mama and daddy duck walking around in their familiar space.

Kindergarteners enjoyed Becky Guttstein's reading of The Matzo Ball Boy, and later created some wonderful matzo balls themselves, with the help of Becky and Leah Guttstein.

First grade created hamantaschen, and enjoyed the pleasant weather -- nice enough for an outdoor recess!

Throughout the school, students were working on their class tzedakah box creations. The judging for best creation will take place this Sunday, March 22. 1st, 2nd and third place winning designs win a pizza party for the class.

High school students in grades 9-12 enjoyed Kulanu, a program at the CJCE. The session focused on Social Justice and featured guest speaker Ethan Zohn - winner of Survivor: Africa. "Kulanu" is a collaborative effort of Beth Jacob, Beth Abraham, Temple Israel, Temple Beth Or and the Federation.

Be sure to join us this Sunday morning, March 22, at 11:30 am for our annual 4th grade Mock Wedding. The festivities begin at 11:30 am!

Kind regards,

Nora Rubinoff
Education Administrator

Spotlight on Grade 7

Working on tzedakah box projectIn 7th grade we've had some very emotionally moving classes in recent weeks.  We completed the watching and discussion of Schindler's List and discussed the impact the holocaust had on sympathetic Germans at the time and their efforts to help the Jewish cause.  The students have had some insightful comments and opinions.

We have now started our series about how the war crimes of the holocaust were treated.  We've started our viewing of "Judgment at Nuremberg."  After the end of World War II, the world gradually became aware of the full extent of the war crimes perpetrated by the Third Reich. In 1948, a series of trials were held in Nuremberg, Germany, by an international tribunal, headed by American legal and military officials, with the intent of bringing to justice those guilty of crimes against humanity. However, by that time most of the major figures of the Nazi regime were either dead or long missing, and in the resulting legal proceedings American judges often found themselves confronting the question of how much responsibility someone held who had "just followed orders."

Part of our discussions will be to discuss concept of guilt by association and how German's felt after the war.

Even better, why not join us next Sunday and linger over a cup of coffee and a bagel at Cafe Or, or some good study in Rabbi Chessin's Tanakh study group (10:30 am)?
