DSCN1135.JPGWhat happens to our children when they grow up? I attended my first daddy daughter dance this weekend. I found myself, when I wasn’t being told by Emma not to embarrass her or to sit down, looking wistfully at all the 9 year olds in their fairy princess dresses dancing happily with their fathers. I realized at that moment that my little girl was growing up. She was now 9 and on her way to teen world. After dancing or not dancing when commanded to Hannah Montana and High School Musical for a night I was not looking forward to this next stage.

High School students being led in meditation by Rabbi BursteinBut then this morning I met with our 15 seniors and juniors and listened to these committed and engaged teens. We discussed virtues and their affect on us as women and men. These students are incredible. They are insightful and challenging. They work hard to find the best in each other and in me as their teacher. And that wistfulness of the night before began to be replaced with excitement for the young woman Emma can become in our school and at this temple. I can only hope she becomes like our teens today.

Be well,

Rabbi David Burstein

DSCN1142.JPGImportant Congregational Meeting March 8

There will be an important congregational meeting on March 8 at 10:00 am in the sanctuary on Sunday, March 8. This meeting will discuss the plan for the renovation of the Temple Beth Or building. Plan on joining us!

Spotlight on Grade 6

This year the 6th grade meets together with the 5th grade for Hebrew for the first part of Sunday morning and on Wednesdays. We are making good progress in learning congregational melodies and also in reading the prayers for a Shabbat morning service. The students are also using The New Siddur Program for Hebrew and Heritage, each working at their own pace and self-checking their work when they are finished with a chapter. We also have three favorite games. In Hangman, we use Hebrew words from the particular prayer we are studying. For the Memory game, students have to match Hebrew words with their English translations. And Around the World is a very fast-paced reading game used with flashcards. Things can get very noisy during these games, but it’s a good kind of noise!

The 6th grade has also learned the blessings for reading the Torah and recently walked through some of the mechanics of the Torah service. Each student was able to hold the Torah and we were able to look at the Song of the Sea, a poem sung by Moses after the Israelites had crossed the Sea of Reeds. The song contains the Mi Chamocha text that we see in our evening and morning services. We saw what the text looks like in the scroll and heard it sung to what may be the oldest melody in the Torah.

DSCN1120.JPGMitzvah Opportunity

Our friends at David’s Church are in need of childcare providers for their Easter Services on Sunday, April 12, 2009. There are two services, one at 9 am and one at 10:45 am. Volunteers would need to arrive 15 to 20 minutes before the service. We need between 4-6 individuals for each service.

If you can assist, please contact Marvin Miller at 641-5374 or by e-mail at srmmem@aol.com.

Our PTO Is The Greatest!

DSCN1138.JPGTBO Religious School is very fortunate on Sunday mornings to have the wonderful assistance of dedicated volunteers. PTO Moms and Dads collect attendance and tzedakah, distribute snacks, work on special projects in the Education office and just generally lend a hand. Here are just a few of the wonderful parents who help us on Sunday mornings:

Melissa Guadalupe, Eileen Wolf, Jennifer Mader, Gina Kahn, Andrea Kuperman, Jereme Kuperman, Deb Char....the list goes on and on.
