DSCN1008.JPGAs I was driving up to school today I had an epiphany. No it wasn't the giant Jesus talking to me that usually happens after a late Friday night service. No, it was more benign than that.

DSCN0999.JPG As I was driving, I looked back in the back seat and saw Coby and Emma dozing off. And I realized in a visceral that I am really in charge of protecting these two amazing people. I can't remember the last time I sat in the back seat. I have officially become the designated driver of the family. I have become my dad. And in that moment I missed him and the comfort it had brought me knowing that he would take care of me. But that is the stuff of this stage of life - when we become the dads and moms taking over for our own and our kids sleep safely in the backseats as we drive on.

Be well and hug your kids today!!!

Spotlight on our Confirmation Class

Now that our American elections are finally settled, the 10th grade of Temple Beth Or will turn their attention to the Israeli national elections to take place on February 10, 2009.  How do Israelis choose their leaders?  What are the major issues?  Why so many parties?  For what do the political parties in Israel stand?  Why is there a coalition government?  Who is who?  What are the prospects for peace?

We'll discuss the parties' platforms on Palestinian statehood, the peace process, Jerusalem, the settlements, religion and state and of course Israel's struggling economy and staggering inflation. While I doubt that we will solve all of the Middle Eastern challenges, when it comes to understanding Israeli politics the Confirmands will soon join President Obama and the Shas (religious) party in saying, "Yes we can!"
