"May the One who blessed our fighters Joshua, David and Judah, Deborah, Yael and Judith, those who has been called to active service. May it be Your will, Adonai our God, that they be guided safely and protected against every enemy and harm. May their path be successful and guard their going out and coming in to life and peace now and forever. And let us say: Amen.

(Adapted from the Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism's siddur)

My mother is in Israel. She and my dad had planned a trip before he became ill. She is there now with family to celebrate my cousin’s bar mitzvah. She is in a country at war and I am not worried. I lived in Israel, I have seen her soldiers and lived in safety due to their sacrifices. No one wanted Gaza to break this way. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert  told his Cabinet on Sunday that Israel could not allow its civilians to continue to be targeted by rockets from Gaza. He said, "This morning I can look every one of you in the eyes and say the government did everything before deciding to go ahead with the operation. This operation was unavoidable."

No one wants innocent civilians to die. But the casualties of this war have already hurt countless of Israelis subjected to bombings and missile attacks. How much is enough? May our prayers extend to the innocent casualties on both sides. But may we also realize that Hamas is the cause for this war and must accept  the responsibility of the death of innocents both Israeli and Palestinian. May God protect all who search for peace and keep all those protecting others safe.

Be well,

Rabbi David Burstein

Spotlight on Grade 1

TBO Religious School 1/4/2009I hope that everyone enjoyed their time off. It is hard to believe that half the year is over. Rosh Hashanah is far behind us. We have had so much fun learning. Did you know that we had an apple tasting, made our own indoor sukkah, ate an edible tower of Babel, and dressed up as animals for Noah's Ark? The children are wonderful with their Hebrew letters. I was impressed how they were able to position their own bodies to represent their letters.

There is still so much more to experience in the next half of the school year. We have our family service coming up in Feb. There are more stories to learn about Abraham, Isaac, Joseph and Jacob. The rest of the Hebrew letters need to be taught. To learn about Shabbat we will be making a special " Shabbat box" (please save your shoe boxes). Don't forget Passover. It would be a great experience for the children to have a small version of a Passover Seder in class.

My philosophy regarding teaching will remain the same: informative, experiential, fun and varied. I am looking forward to teaching your children for the second half of the year.
