Temple Beth Or Tzedakah PresentationAngels on a Sunday

Did you know that we as Jews have had a long history with angels? Angels appear throughout our text and folklore. Angels came to our ancestors "helping them become closer to God" and by doing so bringing them to a better life. They are the harbingers of great blessings.

One of the most famous stories of angels is Jacob’s dream. Jacob runs from home and lost and alone in the desert lays down to sleep. He dreams of a great ladder reaching from the ground to heaven and upon it angels are going up and down. They are a bridge - a moving bridge between heaven and earth.

Today was a gray day in Dayton but you wouldn’t have been able to tell that by the spirits and angels that filled our schools. I often see our children as bridges between heaven and earth. They are messengers of newness, vitality and hope. I watched in amazement as our kindergarten class climbed Jacob’s ladder dressed as angels before “flying” into the arms of their teachers. I watched 130 messengers of giving as we presented a check for one thousand dollars, raised in  tzedakah change, to Jewish Social Services. And I met with our amazing staff and celebrated with these adult angels the power that they have in affecting the future of Judaism. I am surrounded by angels every Sunday. I am truly a man with many blessings.

Thanks to you all for a great year so far.

Be well,

Rabbi David Burstein

Attention All Beth Or Families

The Regional Youth Group event is approaching quickly, November 16-18.  BOTY is working very hard to complete a spectacular event.

However, the youth group is struggling to house all the teenagers that are coming in from out of town.  Many high schoolers still need host families for Friday and Saturday night. Most family responsibilities are pick-up late Friday and Saturday night, and drop-off early Saturday and Sunday morning.  The only meal that you need to provide is breakfast Saturday morning.  Please help no matter if you have a high schooler or not. The youth group really needs your support.  If you can host please contact the temple or e-mail me at dlgisme@woh.rr.com ASAP.

Thank you,
Derek Gutmann
President of BOTY

Tzedakah Presentation

Temple Beth Or Tzedakah PresentationToday Rabbi Burstein and our religious school proudly presented Josh Lader, a representative for Dayton Jewish Social Services, with a check for $1000 raised through our own tzedakah program. Mr. Lader spoke to all the children in the school in the sanctuary about how the money will help Dayton families with children receive winter jackets, food, and even help with medical and utility bills. In addition, they help Russian immigrants who are housed at Covenant House with clothing, learning English, and whatever else they need. Finally, a photo of the whole school on the bima with Rabbi Burstein and Mr. Lader capped the event. We are so proud of what our children have shared to enable this mitzvah to happen.

Hanukkah Bazaar

The annual Temple Beth Or Hanukkah Bazaar will be held November 11 and 18 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, and Wednesday November 14 from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Come shop for menorahs, candles, dreidels, gifts, collectibles with items from various vendors. Note that the religious school shopping day for the bazaar will be November 18.
