"Noah was a righteous man in his generation" (Genesis 6:9). "What seems most relevant is that he spoke from the midst of his generation," writes Rabbi Kerry Olitzky at MyJewishLearning.com. Rabbi Olitzky writes that Noah spoke "only for the situation of humanity as he experienced it, not in the way he wished it to be."

Temple Beth Or Religious School 10/28/2007Kolitsky suggests that some in the Jewish community are doing the same thing. They are looking boldly our our current community -- our generation -- and they are responding. Such is the case at Temple Beth Or in our religious school. Our staff works to meet our students where they are, lift them up and wrap them in the warmth, tradition and joy of Jewish learning and Jewish experiences.

As I visited in our classrooms this morning, I smiled at the ruach I felt in our school. Our teachers are creating wonderful experiences and opportunities for learning every day, from helping students to truly visualize the size of Noah's Ark, to reenactments of boarding the ark to help our students internalize stories from the Torah. Staff work together to share learning experiences, such as the sixth grade's creation of a full-scale ark and the first grade's boarding of it.

"Noah emerged from the flood in order to recreate the world," wrote Rabbi Olitsky. Temple Beth Or Religious School is working with great dedication to create new opportunities for the exploration of Jewish learning and the love of our faith.

Be well,

Do you know that David Beckham is part Jewish? And this was before his foray into Kabbalah. His maternal grandfather Joe West was Jewish and Becks in his biography remembers going to Temple and wearing a kippah growing up.

Well this Sunday we didn’t need Beckham to step on the pitch to start our Jewish Sports League soccer tourney. With spirit and skill the boys from Beth Or showed Dayton what teamwork and passion can do on the field. The first game was played against Beth Jacob, a worthy opponent. We had met them in the finals last year and the rematch was anticipated with great excitement.
We relied on our numbers and unselfish play to win 12-3. 7 different players scored and our defense, spearheaded by Mike Bank in net, proved tough to penetrate. Every player contributed and our fans provided great support.

In the finals we met Temple Israel who had defeated the CJCE 3-2 in their previous match. The final match was hard fought , but led by Ben Solganick, our youngest player, we prevailed 6-1.

Temple Beth Or should be very proud of your team. They played with class and our numbers alone were incredibly impressive. We had 18 players come to play and many fans help cheer us on. I was proud to be part of this team and their attitude. Thank you all.

Be well,

Rabbi David Burstein

NFTY Ohio Valley Sub-Regionals - a plea for housing volunteers

Dear 8th through 12th grade parents,

As most of you know, our youth group will be hosting sub-regionals during the weekend of November 16-18.  About 100 teenagers from across Indiana and Ohio will be coming to Dayton for this youth group event called Technolojew: Jews in the modern world.  We will also sponsor social action projects and a Saturday night social program.  It will be a great deal of fun.

For this event to be successful, BOTY needs host families for out of town guests.  Hosting will consist of providing Friday and Saturday night housing, breakfast Saturday morning, and transportation from the event.

High Schoolers that attend the event will make new Jewish friends, and experience a new perspective on Judaism.  By hosting, then your teenager will be able to get to know other Jewish teenagers even better.  Please consider hosting, a housing form is available for download by clicking here.  A meeting will take place with the BOTY advisor AJ Lauber regarding housing on a later date.  If you can help, please complete the form located by clicking here and return to the Temple Beth Or office or please e-mail me at dlgisme@woh.rr.com.

Thank you,
Derek Gutmann
President of BOTY

Spotlight on Temple Beth Or Religious School Sixth Grade

Temple Beth Or Religious School 10/28/2007Today we constructed Noah's Ark in the TBO parking lot. Click here to watch a short movie describing our project.

Using chalk and a loooooong tape measure, students measured the distance of the ark, after converting cubits to feet. They then drew the ark to scale in the Temple Beth Or parking lot. Later, our first grade students, dressed as animals, entered the ark two by two, led by instructor Myrna Schutzbank (dressed as Mrs. Noah).

Did Noah Have a Boa?

Did Noah have a boa
When his ark sailed out to sea?
Did he have a cute piranha?
And a hive of bumblebees?

And did Noah have a rhino?
A shark and an alligator?
Or did Noah leave those ones behind
And say, "I'll see you later"?

When God told Noah what to do
Build an ark, get the creatures aboard,
He didn't tell Noah to pick only good ones
And leave all the others ashore.

You see, God told Noah to gather His creatures ~
All the animals, big and small.
And bring them onto the ark two by two,
And take care of them, one and all!
