September 16, 2007

A fourth grade student came bounding out of his class today and shouted, “That was awesome !” His mom turned to me and said, “That’s why we come here.”

Today was an awesome day. We gathered, Kindergarten through Ninth grade and as 110 strong, we sang , celebrated and danced. Led by our cantor and songleaders, we held our first songfest, a piece of camp transplanted in our sanctuary, establishing a precedent that will carry us into the future.

Sunday school can be fun and exciting and wanted by our children and adults alike. Today we had over 95% attendance and our classes engaged in discussions ranging from apples and honey in first grade to Jewish Hiphop in our 9th grade.

Parents sat and shared coffee and conversation. Fully stretched and limber from Pilates, our adults discussed the Tanakh.

And I walked and listened and smiled, realizing once again why I love it here and why my own children can’t wait to come with their daddy on a Sunday. I can’t wait until next week either.

Be well,

Rabbi David Burstein

Be The Light!

We love to share great news and goings on from our religious school students. Be The Light will focus on sharing news with our religious school family.

Here's a letter from religious school student Adam Coy:

Dear Temple Beth Or Congregation,

My name is Adam Coy and my Bar Mitzvah project involves Standing Together. Standing Together is an organization that sends stuff to the soldiers on the Israeli border. It began by people sending pizzas but now, it includes, coffee, candy etc. I am collecting post cards with words of encouragement to mail to Standing Together. They will distribute them to the Israeli soldiers guarding the border. I will have these postcards at the High Holiday services. Please take a moment to write a few words of encouragement and I will mail them to Standing Together.

Thank You for Your Time,
Adam Coy

Yasher koach, Adam! If you're interested in helping Adam, drop your postcards or letters off in the religious school office. Thank you!

Kieran Smith organized a highly successful book drive as his bar mitzvah project. Over 1,000 books were donated to Children's Medical Center Dayton as a result of Kieran's good work. Read more by clicking here. Mazel tov, Kieran!

Thanks to volunteers who helped Be The Light in the religious school office Sunday morning -- Susan Diamond, for book searches; Joni Watson & Melissa Guadalupe for collecting attendance, tzedakah and distributing snack; and Gina Kahn for repairing a meditation pillow (while durable, meditation pillows are not able to withstand being jumped on!).

Be The Light! Send your news and uplifts to Nora Rubinoff in the religious school office at norarubinoff@gmail.com.
