May 11, 2008

This past week we celebrated Israel’s 60th birthday on Wednesday and held our teacher appreciation service on Friday. Both events were moving and important. The students on Wednesday helped lead a service honoring the history and importance of Israel and had an amazing meal of falafel and a birthday cake.

Friday night was a celebration of appreciation for those men and women who have taught your children this past year. In a service led with skill and passion by our 6th grade class, our teachers were honored.

I am blessed with an amazing staff of mentsches who really love both teaching and your children. With a 90% retention rate for next year, we are ready to have another magical year. Thank you to all my teachers,

Be well,

Rabbi David

Spotlight on Third Grade

The main areas we worked on in 3rd grade were the holidays and Jewish history and all the information associated with them the children could remember about activities they've done before and what they have done with their family members. To that end we have discussed the people involved with each holiday and event, the history behind the holiday/event, the foods and customs we each eat and follow, and what we think about each holiday or event. Since we have students from diverse cultural homes and school environments the shared information has been very rich and allowed the students to hear how others view our religion and customs. To help the students remember holiday details we play memory games, using pictionnary boards with two or more teams, or the names of heroes and famous people connected the holidays, and the Jewish calendar. We have also made mobiles of Jewish religious and historical symbols, masks, wrote skits to perform for our school, and individual Star of David wall hangings.

The second main topic is Hebrew prayer. We work to learn several prayers, the Hebrew alphabet and also read the prayers learned. We have used music, songs, games, PowerPoint presentations, and various Hebrew Prayer software programs to learn, study, and practice Hebrew prayer. This year I added signing the prayers which allowed the children to hear, read, say and do the prayers. This proved to be very effective. I hope to expand its use in my classroom next year.

One the things I always do in my classes is to use what my students already know and build on that. In that way everyone is both a student and a teacher. In class, the use of songs, games, CDs, computer programs, visual presentations, craft projects, and leading a family service have helped the students learn and commit to memory material presented in friendly, warm, and exciting activities that have help my students build self confidence and strong self images. My students see studying Jewish history, culture, religion, Hebrew and prayer as part of them not something separate that their parents have to make them do.
