April 13 , 2008

Passover is my favorite holiday. Yet, growing up I didn't like it very much. My grandparents would have a formal sit down 4 hour affair which was slightly unbearable to say the least. That changed when I became the seder leader in my own home. My seder is also a 4 hour affair but it is more like a circus than a petrified sit down. We recreate the Exodus with Moses and the Red Sea. We eat a lot sing and have a plague fiesta.

I preach creating positive Jewish memories as the goal of our school. Passover is my time to model what I believe wholeheartedly-that Judaism can be fun and exciting.

I hope you create your own memories this Passover and have fun doing it.

Chag Sameach and be well,

Rabbi David

New Email Address for the Education Office

You may have noticed that the Temple Beth Or web site has had a little sprucing up over the past few weeks. Please mark your address books that messages to the education office should now be addressed to education [at] templebethor [dot] com. (Please note that to slow down those pesky spammers who scan web sites for e-mail addresses that we've purposely left out the normal punctuation you'd see in an e-mail address.) Thank you!

Spotlight on Grade 2

Dear Parents,

We continue our travels from Jerusalem to Ein Gedi, a desert oasis with waterfalls located on the Dead Sea's western shore. This city is very wonderful with full lush foliage, exotic birds and wildlife. We talked about Qumran National Park where in the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in the caves there in 1947. In our discussions of Ein Gedi, we learned through dramatic play about the hiking trails, the waterfalls, the camp sites and the cave explorations. We even had some animals visiting our classroom during the wildlife part of our lesson!

Pesach is fast approaching. We are learning not only about the details of the Seder but covering a bit more in depth the history of the exodus out of Egypt. The Passover holiday, when families come together for festive meals, can sometimes seem overwhelming for a young child. There are several ways to make the Seder experience more accessible for our children by inviting them to take an active role in the holiday observance. Making centerpieces for the Seder and using dramatic play during the meal are some of the ways we keep a child centered seder. Remember whatever you choose to do, every act can become a meaningful memory and tradition.

Have a wonderful week!

Shalom,

Angela Gruenberg
