Psalms as a spiritual reservoir in difficult times
Dear Temple Beth Or families,
Thank you all for your wonderful and touching healing prayer for Rabbi Burstein, his father and the Burstein family yesterday. It was offered with great intention and ruach, just as Rabbi Burstein has taught us and led us through the years. Special thanks to Jay Weiss and Cantor Joyce Dumtschin, who led this very special prayer offering to the Burstein family with great love and compassion.
The Jewish people have turned to psalms during times of challenge for centuries. As we all offer prayers and strength to Rabbi Burstein, his father and family, I found the following article on MyJewishLearning.com and wanted to share it with you:
"Illness, suffering, and loss mute us--they leave us without words," writes Rabbi Simkha Y. Weintraub. "Overwhelmed, confused, distraught, despairing--and/or profoundly grateful, reflective, renewed, attuned--whatever our state, we are often left speechless, feeling that words fall flat, or do not convey what we want, need, or intend. In the face of these challenges, those who are in pain, as well as those who care for them, may need new ways of communicating, new tools for talking, and new modes of relating."
Rabbi Weintraub's article talks about healing Jewish psalms and their place in our Jewish history. He also talks about weaving Psalms into prayer, in meditation, in conversation, song or study.
