January 27, 2008

DSC_0015.JPGAnother week has come and we are firing on all cylinders at Temple Beth Or. This past weekend we had a full house from Preschool to High School, ach class was working extremely hard at bringing Judaism to life. January and February often bring the winter blahs but each Sunday serves to invigorate my core.

One of my fondest memories of this Sunday was listening in on Ira Segalewitz explaining to his grandson and his 4th grade class the Yiddish terms and culture used in Fiddler on the Roof as the class was watching the movie. An intergenerational moment , and an opportunity for our students to learn from a true expert. I would also like to thank Wendy Katz and Caryl Segalewitz for the amazing ad in this month's Observer. It capture the essence of our school and temple in a profound way.

With my best wishes,

Rabbi David

An Opportunity for our Students to Support the TBO Capital Campaign

This is an announcement of an opportunity for young people to support the TBO Capital Campaign. Sign-ups will follow.

Anyone over 12 years old can volunteer to babysit for a family wishing to attend Rabbi Chessin's 50th birthday celebration on April 12. The family would pay $7.50 an hour and $1 hour for each extra child. The check would be made out to TBO (not the babysitter) and get a tax deduction as a result.

Teaching Your Children About Tzedakah

MyJewishLearning.com has an article on teaching children about tzedakah.

"Justice is a central theme in the lives of children," writes author Sara Shapiro-Plevan."From questions of fairness and equality between siblings ("Why does Danny get more than I do?") to ethical decisions and behavior ("Why is it OK to tell a little white lie?"), kids are engaged in a daily struggle with justice. So then, it follows, childhood is the ideal time to teach your child about justice from the Jewish perspective: tzedakah."

Thank you to Mike Brown of Loxwood Lane Photography for the wonderful photos that he took during religious school on Sunday, January 27.

Thanks to our eighth grade students for hosting a speaker from the Islamic Center in West Chester, Ohio! We know you made our guest feel very welcome and appreciated!

has its angel that bends
over it and whispers,
'Grow, grow.'”
