January 6, 2008

Temple Beth Or Religious School January 6, 2008Welcome back everyone!!!

I hope your break was peaceful and restful. Our first day back had great energy and it was so good to see everyone smiling and happy. We instituted some new prayers in our mid-day session and thanks to our cantor, Dr. Frank, Rachel and Alex, the session was a rousing success.

We have committed to enabling our students to become stakeholders in the school. One way we are going to do this is by having them be responsible for cleaning their classrooms. This may affect pickup by a couple of minutes. The idea for this change comes from a program I was involved in when I attended boarding school. All students were required to hold a work job on campus. We were graded and it was done everyday. The school employed a skeleton crew of custodial and kitchen staff who were our teachers. I cleaned up the cafeteria one semester and worked in the kitchen the following one. For an elite boarding school, I thought it was a great concept and obviously remember it to today. Learning to care for our space is integral to our program at TBO; thank you for your support.

Be well,

Rabbi David Burstein

Fifth Grade News

Hey everyone! Happy New year! Our theme for the year is Jewish history, throughout the year they will be putting together a museum to reflect what they have discovered. So far this year the fifth graders have been working on traveling through time collecting pieces of art, and history for their museum. They have shown great interest in the history of Judaism, and have been a tremendous treat to be with! This up coming semester we will be taking a look at how reform Judaism came to exist, and how it has come to be what it is today. I can't wait for them to learn more about a big piece of who they are, and to learn from them myself as we journey together! Have a great year, and feel free to browse the museum!

B'Shalom,

AJ Lauber
